âGotta say. That footage of you ripping Derek a new asshole? That was otherworldly.â Harper points her sandwich at me in approval before taking a bite as we sit at a deli in the Presidio neighborhood of the city.
I chuckle, almost choking on the fries I just shoved in my mouth. Itâs the day after the seminar. Harper and I just finished a hike along the Batteries to Bluffs trail and are treating ourselves to greasy sandwiches at her favorite dive deli. While waiting in line, she asked how work went yesterday, so I showed her a clip of the raw footage that I saved on my phone.
âIâm serious.â Harper squirts a hefty amount of ketchup onto her own basket of fries. âThe way you laid the smackdown on that guy was a whole new level of epic.â
âThat guy either isnât aware of or doesnât care how much heâs hurting his fiancéeâs feelings. Heâs too busy enjoying the ego boost from his friend. And thereâs a slew of men out there just like him. No wonder Simon has made this a career. Crappy men are everywhere.â
âYou should put it in the next episode,â Harper says. âPeople will go crazy for you.â
I shake my head, then gulp from my water glass. âNo way. This series is about Simon, not me.â
âYou were in his interview episodes. And the strip club episode.â
âThose are totally different. Of course Iâd be in the interview episodesâI was the one asking him questions. And I was in the strip club scene for just a bit to help with the setup and when I asked him interview questions. Iâm meant to observe and document the subject. Iâm never supposed to make it about me. And that clip I sent you of me going off on Derek was definitely all me, not Simon. Thereâs no reason it should be in the show. I just showed it to you because I know you love it when a jerk gets told off.â
Harper shakes her head, clearly tired of listening to me. âSpeaking of Simon, I still canât believe youâve been working together for over two months and you havenât once fooled around with him.â
I take a gigantic bite of my sandwich, hoping that Harper doesnât notice how red Iâm turning at the thought of what almost went down between Simon and me during the couplesâ retreat in Tahoe.
I wait the several seconds it takes for me to clear that huge bite of food before I look up at Harper. When I do, sheâs frowning at me, clearly suspicious.
âSpill,â she says.
âThereâs nothing to spill.â
âBullshit. Youâre as red as a beet. Did something happen between you two?â
Throwing my head back, I let out a groan. âOf course not.â I sigh, realizing that I canât lie to Harper to save my life. âAt least not in the way you think,â I finally admit.
Her eyes go wide just as a giddy smile spreads across her full face. âTell me!â
I give her a quickened
